BARCAMP (Reloaded) Part-III

Posted by dipanjan on April 23, 2006

Lunch was ok but  barcamp and its beginning was the real food for thought as the intiation of bcamp was in discussion……Amazon’s webservices were new and in beta…few never actually opened at all…..though the services were for a niche market a lot is needed to be answered….Amar tried his best to answer the queries but I guess a lot was undecided  as per amazon goes.

Voice XML a interesting stuff from an IITan (Nikhil) was interesting….I talked to him off line, he gave me some sites to enquire further.

Last but not the least was a man from
Hyderabad….who probably made up his own lang. called NPL (if im right)…..its full of blocks, sockets and connects, his compilation was graphic and it’s a real good effort!!

A lot of people about 10 to 15 were live blogging…..taking pics and videos….. I collected some of the pictures.

By then I was so high on all these stuff, I took some time out…. sat back on those beanbags with Ankur talked about our. Proj and that’s it!!!

It was a life time experience for me and I got reassured ….GEEK RULES!!

BARCAMP (reloaded) Part-II

Posted by dipanjan on April 23, 2006

The scrum was presented by Pete the man from Yahoo…..he was one of the initiators in making scrum a success in yahoo…..the best part about the pres. Was it was full of anecdotes and we got to know some real stuff about yahoo…..later Nicolas talked more about it and he said Valtech adopted scrum in lot of its teams…….Second was Tara’s Pinko marketing……Charming lady with a witty pres. And an interesting strategy……my understanding is she in one of the starters of barcamp, her topic was how to market a product in the community and get a business out of it.

Next was podshala which I didn’t attend… instead I went for Chad,s Hack day lessons…..it was some event he initiated and the lazy but humorous way he presented it was interesting.

TAAZZA news site…..it seems that everybody waited for them…..Arunram did a great job….as per him the site is not just a news aggregator but a lot more….the functions he showed was really something new and he said its going to be launched by six to seven weeks (they are in server acquiring  process)….what more ruby on rails is one of its main lang.

BARCAMP (My kind of place) part-I

Posted by dipanjan on April 23, 2006

We started of quite early…never wanted to miss a thing that day…….registering was quite fun…..stickers, ur batch and a funny photo to start with , what more do u want……initially we did some volunteering, picked up some stuff like those foss.in pads and those yellow capped pens…….

U know what …my productive or the fun part started as soon as we started interacting…. we met a guy from Manipal, final yr student like us got through in iflex (lucky) I suppose…..The actual idea of blog, community and the business as such  was understood after we had an interesting session with the American of Travelocity a .com for traveling he gave us a very interesting thought on how they market their service……..

I got the idea that the community is not only for blogging but also for some serious stuff. The best part was when we talked with Nicolas he is an architect in valtech, he was working in a very interesting idea of identifying people from diff. places and get to know their taste buds to customize the menu for them…..I raised few points and we had a nice conversation, he gave me his card, i'll probably mail him sometime.

First sessions where on mobile computing and scrum(a s/w agile pro.) we choose the latter  and the day started…………

BARCAMP (Gotta see)!

Posted by dipanjan on April 19, 2006

The other day i was in landmark, for the first time in myvisittolandmark history i went to the comp. section and opened up few books……well all for a good cause u see…….beside books of "opus dei" and one osho's crapy book, i opened up 'pearl 7'….. i thought its just another lang. but it was quite intriguing so i did whats justified…..kept it back in its proper place. Then there was 'Biztalk server' book i looked into….. nothing that can be understood easily there too.

I looked into perl because of Ankur (a open source enthusiast) and in BARCAMP there would be lots of people like him…..anyway a huge exposure for me to see and hear whats real now…….though my xams are kind of breathing on my neck who cares!!??…………Looking forward to BARCAMP!

Dentists,A toothless experience!

Posted by dipanjan on April 12, 2006

The dentist’s seat or the “Semi bed” is quite pleasant and comfy specially if you are awake for the last 15 hrs, however my comfort was till I let my head fall into the seat. After that all my good feelings went out of the small basin attached to the seat.

As soon as she (a pretty wholesome girl about our age) poked into my mouth I thought she is going to announce some thing like  ”Limphocercoma of the intestine” (of Anand fame) or some thing equally filmy. Then sanity prevailed as she said some petty things like teeth cleaning and capping. The doctor is good looking yes, but a cowboy hand as far as teeth cleaning goes, she almost drilled my teeth out of their beloved sockets.

I tried my best to switch on my charm and charisma but it was kind of tough when you are laid down with tears falling out of your eyes and some funny instruments crowding into your mouth, the robe I was fitted into like a newborn was not helping either.

At the end of it all…….. she prescribed me some ointments and pushed some Colgate products like brush, pastes et al……. I was Mr. Cool out there paying almost double of what I should have and brought home some stuffs I have no idea about and no intentions of using .

Lastly I got why they say “it’s a million dollar smile”, I guess it has nothing to do with the person who is doing the process, but its all about the amount of bucks he spend before, in his visit to the dentist!

Take this or that(doesnt matter any more)!

Posted by dipanjan on April 7, 2006

Second last semester of ICFAI MCA has been a mix of disappointment and aloofness: when you know you can’t do anything about it, and there’s no intention of changing the system and all that crap also(how many ever times you see “Rang De Basanti” doesn’t matter) and some real hilarious events.

  • Choosing of our end semester electives:

We had real good electives: To start with, subjects with high technicality, some real good, few heard of before and ofcourse some with real good names. Why I am segregating those in these laymen’s term is coz we never had a proper presentation as to why and what the subject where all about.         I started with AI, Database & admin and
Mobile tech. but there is some Rule in ICFAI which says there should be min.10 students for an elective. Its really funny as ICFAI doesn’t usually have more then 20 to 30 studs. per class.Needless to say the number is over estimated and sans all logic. We shouted in vain on two clowns posing as teachers and lastly gave up.When the college is full of teachers and students hugely incompetent and matured idiots(ICFAI make sure the hired students and teachers have IQ below 40), its obvious we wont get our choice of subs.We were lobbying for each others subjects to gather a group of 10(some offering free pack of cigs or a lunch at SLV) and it was almost like buying MLAs for a making a guv.
